How the calculator works
In Merge Dragons, 3 identical items become 1 item of the next level, and 5 identical items become 2. The 5-merge is the better deal: two 3-merges spend 6 items for the same result.
So the calculator uses as many 5-merges as it can. When the amount you want is odd, there is 1 item left that no 5-merge delivers. It then adds a single 3-merge to close the gap.
The same step is repeated level by level, from your goal down to level 1. At each level, making x items of the level above takes 5x/2 items, rounded up.
Example: 3 items of level 5
For 3 level 5 items you do one 5-merge and one 3-merge, which takes 8 level 4 items. Those 8 take 20 of level 3, then 50 of level 2 and finally 125 of level 1.
Why a single 3-merge matters
Calculators that only count 5-merges work in pairs and round your goal up. If you want 3 items, they price 4. Here the math is done for the exact amount you asked for.

How many items do I need to merge in Merge Dragons?
The minimum is 3 identical items, which become 1 item of the next level. With 5 identical items you get 2 items of the next level.
Is it better to merge 5 or merge 3?
Merge 5. Each next-level item costs 2.5 items with a 5-merge and 3 items with a 3-merge. You save 1 item for every two you produce.
When should I do a 3-merge?
Only when you need an odd amount. Do 5-merges for every pair and one 3-merge for the item left over. For 3 items that costs 8 instead of 10.
How many level 1 items do I need for one high-level item?
For 1 item: level 2 takes 3, level 3 takes 8, level 4 takes 20, level 5 takes 50, level 6 takes 125, level 8 takes 783 and level 10 takes 4,895 level 1 items.
Does the calculator work for any merge chain?
It works for any chain that follows the standard 3-to-1 and 5-to-2 rule. It works with level numbers, so it does not matter which item you are merging.
Does the calculator count items I already have?
Not yet. The math starts from zero and shows the total needed at each level.
